THROBBING GRISTLE
50TH ANNIVERSARY
UPDATED DETAILS OF FREE EVENT AT THE ICA
TG50
Throbbing Gristle - Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (1950-2020) and Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson (1955-2010) - activated 50 years ago, and an incendiary live performance followed on 18 October 1976, part of their Prostitution exhibition at the ICA.
The exhibition and performance caused a tabloid furore. Headlines - “MP’s fury at porn palace” (Daily Mirror) and “Bust-up at Gallery of Porn" (Daily Express) - followed, with the Conservative MP Nicholas Fairbairn going on stand up in Parliament and famously dub Throbbing Gristle “wreckers of civilisation”.
TG50 – which will mark the anniversary on Sunday 18 October 2026 – will see the ICA open from 12pm midday for Throbbing Gristle fans to gather, listen to TG in the main theatre, and share stories of the band and their importance to them.
Due to demand, extra tickets for the Chris & Cosey in conversation with Luke Turner will go on sale today, alongside a second film screening (the Heathen Earth screening is now sold out) which will be of Throbbing Gristle - Live at Kezar Pavilion, San Francisco, 29th May 1981, the band’s final performance before the mission was first terminated in 1981, at 8pm.
In addition, a new range of merch will be launching on that day, and Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti will be at a signing table from 4pm. As well as seven new Throbbing Gristle t-shirts (priced at £25 each), there will be two limited edition items, exclusively available on that day: TGLP50 is an edition of 50 lathe-cut copies of the Throbbing Gristle live performance at the ICA 18th October 1976 (priced at £200 each), and there will be an edition of 70 t-shirts with the TG score card for the ICA performance (priced at £35 each). First come, first served!

LA FABRIQUE – HEAD, BOULEVARD JAMES-FAZY, 15 1201 GENEVA
What goes into the making of an exhibition? This question is the focus of the seminar that will start in the fall of 2025, organized by MAMCO and held at HEAD – Genève (the Geneva University of Art and Design). A full academic year of collaborative work between the museum’s team, the students and guest researcher Branden W. Joseph will culminate in a public exhibition based on the Ecart Archives—the legacy of the 1970s Geneva-based artist collective of the same name.
The Ecart Archives reveal the Mail Art networks that existed outside institutional circles, linking alternative scenes in the Western world. One such example is the Bay Area Dadaists—an array of artists from San Francisco who were inspired by the Dadaist spirit of contestation and fascination for absurdity. The fanzines, collages, and performances created by figures such as Anna Banana, Bill Gaglione and Monte Cazazza found resonance in other scenes—in Canada (Image Bank, General Idea) and the United Kingdom (Cosey Fanni Tutti)—and laid the early foundations for a nascent American punk scene. Through printed documents, videos, and audio recordings, the exhibition will piece together a previously untold story: that of artists claiming their right to be insolent and questioning meaning, gender, authority, and institutions.

Cosey Fanni Tutti & Caroline Catz
In Conversation
at Humber Street Gallery, Hull
Sunday, Jan 25, 2026 from 6pm to 9pm
An In Conversation with Cosey Fanni Tutti and Caroline Catz at Humber Street Gallery.
In conversation at Humber Street Gallery, Caroline Catz and Cosey Fanni Tutti reflect on Cosey’s career and continuing practice, from early transgressive work to questions of memory, control and self-representation. Drawing on their ongoing collaboration, the talk offers insight into how personal history becomes art — and how that work resonates today.
About Caroline: Caroline Catz is an actor, director and screenwriter who has worked extensively across television, film, theatre and radio. Her BBC film Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, won the SXSW Special Jury Prize, and marked her first collaboration with Cosey Fanni Tutti. She is currently working with Cosey on a feature-length documentary exploring Cosey’s life and work.
Incognito exhibition at Humber Street Gallery:
Incognito is the embodiment of multiple identities originally constructed by Cosey Fanni Tutti to function within the glamour industry between 1973 and 1981. The industry comprised modelling agencies, soft-porn magazine publishers and their distributors, as well as a network of venues: studios, pubs and clubs across London.
This eponymous exhibition brings together film, vinyl music, costumes, performance documentation, press cuttings, and correspondence; many rare material items from Cosey’s personal archive never previously exhibited. The Myths And Legendary Tapes of Delia Derbyshire
Original Soundtrack Recordings
by Cosey Fanni Tutti
In 2018, Cosey Fanni Tutti was commissioned to write the soundtrack to director and actor Caroline Catz’s acclaimed, intimate portrayal of the composer, musician and sonic experimentalist, Delia Derbyshire (1937-2001). The album includes the audio explorations and experiments that lead Cosey Fanni Tutti to the final soundtrack for Catz’ film. From the 4-minute long ‘Cornet Lament’ to the humorous ‘Snuff Chorus’ (which references an addiction that Derbyshire had for snuff), the album is a journey through both Delia and Cosey’s practise – Fanni Tutti spent time researching Derbyshire’s archives (both musical and the more personal ephemera of her life) to create an audio world for Catz’s depiction of the artist to inhabit.

IAN BODDY & CHRIS CARTER - CAGED
25th Anniversary Edition
AVAILABLE NOW!
First released in 2000, the album brought together two giants of experimental electronic music: Chris Carter of Throbbing Gristle, and Ian Boddy, composer, sound designer, and founder of the DiN label. Their collaboration produced a work of muscularity and textural depth, shifting between whispers, crescendos, and dissolving beats.
This 25th anniversary edition on The Grey Area of Mute includes two brand-new reimaginings from the original audio: ‘Claustrophobia’ by Carter and ‘Uncaged’ by Boddy. Revisiting its DNA from opposite ends of the spectrum, the album proves once again that being ‘Caged’ is being free.
Caged (25th Anniversary Edition) is out now on The Grey Area of Mute
on limited edition double LP red vinyl, CD and digitally.

Magazine Actions are a body of work made between 1972 - 1980, for which Cosey Fanni Tutti worked as a pornographic model. These Magazine Actions infiltrated both the sex and art industries. Cosey Fanni Tutti conceived of the project as a progression from her use of existing pornography in collages and mail art:
“the idea of cutting around my own body and collaging myself as a nude model from a sex magazine struck me as having an honesty and potency that I felt could be the embodiment of a consummate artwork. I would have created the very image that I then used to create a work of art.” Cosey Fanni Tutti

Curated Route
“If there’s a theme to the artists I’ve chosen for my route, it’s that their works speak through and of the ‘self’, and their bold embrace of different mediums. It begins with a quiet coffee in Soho Square—an iconic, living London landmark, and one of my favourite places when I lived in the city. I so often met friends there after visiting music equipment shops, or used it as a location for photography and filming.”

NEW RELEASE
‘Live at the Volksbühne, Berlin’
Throbbing Gristle’s Live at the Volksbühne Berlin, New Year’s Eve 2005 has been announced as a stand-alone Double Vinyl LP, CD & Digital release - due out via Mute on 16 May 2025.
The 11-track live album was originally available on the recent acclaimed box set, TG Berlin, which chronicled unreleased work recorded around a series of live events curated by the band at the Berlin Volksbühne in 2005/2006.
Recorded 20 years ago at the New Year’s Eve show at the Volksbühne, the album previewed five songs from Part Two: The Endless Not, the band’s first album in 27 years, several years before its release. The set - described by Uncut as “magisterial” - also included ‘Convincing People’, ‘Slug Bait’, and ‘Hamburger Lady’ (their first encore in 25/26 years, and what an encore!) – tracks that had lost none of their potency in the intervening years.
